A mean piece of water

We perceive but frequency, flux

states that seems solid and static

behold the transmission of energy

through a medium, corn starch

in solution, river sand on steel plate

sound travels four times as fast

in water as it does in air.

the shape of the vibrating body

(The shape of the cavity that contains breath)

determines the nodal pattern,

but the spectrum of the signal that excites the vibration

determines which memory

resonates through all possible

permutations

to leave us haunted by waves of successive

compressions,

and rarefactions,

of submerged

records rambling in fever

and silver wings the lung’s limits

as MERLEHAGGARD sings, “II can’t hold myself in line.”
